Is your printer set as the default printer?
To set your printer as the default printer used by all Windows programs
- Click Start, point to Settings, click Printers.
- Right-click the icon that represents your printer.
- Click Set As Default.
Try printing your document again.

Is the printer driver set to work offline? (Back

To determine whether your printer is set to work offline
(NETWORK PRINTERS ONLY)
- Click Start, point to Settings, click Printers.
- Right-click the icon that represents your printer.
- If Use Printer Offline does not appear, your printer is
configured to use a local printer port.
- If Use Printer Offline if checked un check it.

Check the following:
- Is the printer plugged into a power outlet?
- Is the printer's power switch turned on?
- Is your printer set to online? (On most printers, a light next to the
OnLine button indicates online status.)

To determine whether printing is paused
- Click Start, point to Settings, click Printers.
- Right-click the icon that represents your printer.
If the Pause Printing option is selected, cancel this selection and try
printing again.

This action clears the memory of the printer and can solve a number of problems.
After you turn the printer back on, try printing your document again.

Is your program generating the correct output? (Back

To determine whether your program is generating the correct output
- Print a document from another program.
To use Notepad or WordPad to print a test document
- Click Start, point to Programs, point to Accessories
- Click Notepad or WordPad.
- Type a few lines of text, and then click Print on the File
menu.
If your test document prints, there is probably a problem with the program you
were trying to print from originally. Reinstall your program or check with its
manufacturer.

Shutdown, Turn off and restart your computer. (Back

This action clears the ports of the printer and can solve a number of problems.
If this is a server make sure appropriate steps are taken so others do not
loose
their work.
After you turn the printer back on, try printing your document again.

Check the following:
- Is there is an adequate supply of paper in your printer?
- Is the paper jammed?
- Is the cartridge, ribbon, or toner fresh and adequate?

Is your printer driver damaged? (Back

Sometimes the software that communicates with the printer, the printer driver,
can be damaged. There is no obvious sign that your printer driver is damaged.
Reinstall the driver and try to print again. If reinstallation works, you know
that the problem was a damaged printer driver.
To reinstall the printer driver
- Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Printers.
- Right-click the icon that represents your printer.
- Click Delete, and then click Yes.
- If you are prompted to delete files used only for this printer,
click Yes.
- If you are prompted to remove the default printer, click OK.
- Double-click Add Printer, and then follow the steps on the screen.
- Choose your printer from the list of available printers.
- Reinstall your existing driver if you are prompted to do so.
- We suggest (for laser printer not ink jet printers) to use
the HP LaserJet IIP driver.
Tip: You can use HP LaserJet IIP driver for virtually any laser printer.
If this printer is used by more than one person you must set it to share
again:
Try printing your document again.
- Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Printers.
- Right-click the icon that represents your printer.
- Click Sharing, and then click Shared as.
- Click OK
A hand should show up under the printer Icon.

To test your printer cable
- Make sure the cables are well connected.
- Replace the cable with a different one.
Is it your computer port
- Connect the printer to a different port or a different computer if one is
available.
If after all this...................
- Your computer may need repair
- Your printer may not work as EPP or as SPP (try
this)
- Windows may need to be reinstalled
- Your printer may need repair Consider:
- Can others on the network use your printer - Most likely software.
- Can you print by moving the printer to another computer and installing
the driver -
Most likely computer hardware.
- Printer may need as IEEE cable.
Does your printer require an SPP Port?
These are advanced features of windows

Try this only if you have determined that the
problem is most likely the computer.
- Start shut down your computer.
- Enter C-MOS (normally by hitting del over and over again)
(Compaq / IBM may be different)
- Check under peripherals if you can change to SPP or Standard Printer
Port
- If not:
- Start windows.
- click My Computer with right mouse button.
- click the Device Manager Tab
- click the + beside Ports COM + LPT
- click Printer port (LPT1:)
- click Properties
- click driver
- click Next >
- click Display a list of drivers in a specific location
- click Next >
- click Show all hardware
- click (Standard port types)
- click Next >
- click Finish
